Flower in Florida: “Smokable” Medical Cannabis Options

When Florida citizens voted for medical cannabis in 2016, we were under the assumption that the most therapeutic of all forms - the cannabis flower itself - would be available to us. Unfortunately, the Florida legislature initially implemented a bill that restricted cannabis flower to “tamper proof” sealed receptacles intended for vaporization. Patients quickly learned how to un-tamper proof these cups to use the medicine to fit their needs, but it inflated prices and restricted quality and availability.

In March 2019, at the urging of Governor DeSantis the Florida legislature moved forward an update to the bill allowing patients access to “smokable” flower. I use quotes around the word smokable, as cannabis flower has far more medical applications than just smoking. Florida law regulates us to the words “smokable cannabis” when dispensing flower, but many patients find benefit from vaporizing, cooking, or eating raw flower.

Shopping for Cannabis Flower in Florida

Patients sometimes find themselves frustrated with availability and stock of cannabis flower in Florida. Florida’s vertical market slows down the speed and consistency at which cannabis products make it on to dispensary shelves. The demand is high and medicine sells quickly. This post covers the available options here in Florida, as well as some tips for purchasing. I live 45+ minutes away from dispensaries selling flower and can’t drive myself that far so I have to wait for a ride on the weekends. Despite these limits, I do ok gaining access to the medical cannabis flower that I need. Utilizing online ordering for pickup and/or delivery, as well as paying attention to text and email restock updates make the process relatively stress free for me.

Muv Guru

Muv Guru

Muv

Muv carries a wide variety of cannabis strains in rotation. They sell their flower under a Tier system, with Tier 1 being the highest quality and price. Muv is in my top 3 for for Florida medical cannabis flower. It’s typically trimmed and cured well, with aromatic dense buds. My only gripe is the bag packaging - it sometimes crushes the buds. The “express pickup” online ordering option allows you to skip the normal line and move right to a pick up counter when you arrive. They are good about holding the order until you can pick up, while some dispensaries will return it to the shelf if not picked up within 24 hours. Limited delivery available.

Surterra

At the time of this post, Surterra only sells a limited selection of pre rolls, but has plans to release loose flower in the near future. Surterra flower is available in store only.

Flower Options:
Pre Rolls - 1/2 gram each

Pricing:
2/$15

Curaleaf

Curaleaf Cherry Pie Haze

Curaleaf Cherry Pie Haze

Curaleaf doesn’t have a lot of strains in rotation, but seem to keep some type of flower product in stock regularly. However, they haven’t been my favorite dispensary when it comes to quality and consistency. In my experience it seems to be pretty hit or miss, but I have patients and friends in other areas of the State that love them. Online ordering and delivery available.

Flower Options:
Pre Rolls - 1 gram singles and multipacks
Loose Flower  - eighths, larger quantities available on occasion

Pricing:
$47-$56/eighth
Pre Roll multi pack (3) - $39
1 gram Pre Roll - $13

Vidacann

Prior to summer 2019, Vidacann was a consistent and quality flower producer in Florida. Unfortunately they had a difficult time with summer humidity and at the time of this post are just starting to get flower back on the shelves. Vidacann’s Duct Tape is one of my personal all time favorite strains for PTSD and pain. I’m not alone in this - it’s a common patient favorite. They aren’t currently offering in store pickup (order holds) or delivery for loose flower due to stock limitations, but they did in the past and I’m hopeful they will in the future.

Flower Options:
Loose Flower

Pricing:
$40-50 eighth

Kristina’s Favorite Vidacann Strains:
Duct Tape, Pakistani Citral Kush

Rise

Rise is my personal favorite for Florida flower. They have a variety of strains that rotate in and out of stock and quality is consistent. They also include terpene profiles on their labels, which is helpful for identifying individual preferences and benefits. I love their ordering and delivery service - you can choose a specific date and time window that works best for your needs. In store pick up also available. Rise sends out regular restock updates, so sign up for their text message service for easy ordering.

Flower Options:
Loose flower - eighths
CBD and ratio strains available

Pricing:
$30-50/eighth

Rise offers reduced pricing for their “smalls” option. Smalls are the same strains and flower available at the higher tiered pricing, but are sized similarly to popcorn instead of large nugs. This is a great way to save.

Kristina’s Favorite Rise Strains:
Bubba Doja, LSD, White Queen, Phone Home

Trulieve

The first to sell smokable cannabis in Florida, Trulieve has a rotating selection of cannabis strains available in loose flower and prerolls. Modeling after Rise’s smalls, Trulieve recently released flower “minis” at a reduced price. Trulieve isn’t very high on my personal favorites, as middle of the road consistency and glitchy ordering deter me away. However, they have the most number of locations and restock regularly making them an accessible option for many patients. Pay attention to text messages and emails for stock updates (typical restock days M, W, F).. Delivery available for a fee. Mini’s available in store only. Online ordering can sometimes be helpful in securing flower purchases.

Liberty Health Sciences

Liberty shook up the Florida cannabis scene by launching their smokable cannabis flower product with the lowest cost to date. While quality is improving and strain selection is slowly increasing, quality is on par with it’s inexpensive cost. In my experience it’s always poorly trimmed (appears to be machine trimmed) and covered in sugar leaves. I’ve also had batches that were so wet I could not grind them until I let them cure for an additional 2 weeks. Fridays are typically the best days to purchase- they are well stocked and run sales.

Updated 10/29/19: LHS has since raised their flower prices - with some strains remaining $28 and others as high as $40. I’ve yet to see quality on par with this price increase.

Flower Options:
Loose flower - eighths
Pre Rolls - gram
CBD strain available

Pricing:
$25-40/eighth
Pre Rolls - $8-$15/1 gram
No discounts applied to flower

Kristina’s Favorite Liberty Health Sciences Strains:
Blue Dream

Grow Healthy

Grow Healthy has a small variety of cannabis flower available for purchase in store. I don’t have a Grow Healthy nearby (and it’s at the top of the price range) so I can’t comment on their overall quality and consistency. My experience is limited. Patients and friends I talk to report good quality, but in store purchases only make it difficult for many to access.

Flower Options:
Loose flower - eighths

Pricing:
$50 eighth
Pre Rolls $8 1/2 gram

One Plant

One Plant Vanilla Berry Pie

One Plant Vanilla Berry Pie

Formerly called 3 Boys Farm, One Plant started dispensing their organically grown cannabis flower to patients in summer 2019 via delivery while they work on opening physical locations. They are the only Florida MMTC to offer tiered pricing by the quantity of medicine purchased (see below). I recently toured their facility and was impressed with their plants, passion, and overall operation. Consistency of dried flower however has been spotty, with patients reporting small excessively dry buds with some strains. They win in the price department, with a great first time patient discount (25% off) and discounted pricing with the more you purchase of the same strain and phenotype. At the time of this post they are still very new to the Florida market and seem to be working out kinks in ordering, sales, and consistency. I was impressed with their Vanilla Berry Pie, but found their Cathy’s Choice to be dry. Delivery is available statewide.

10/24/19 UPDATE: One Plant is no longer offering their tiered pricing and only selling by the eighth. They state this will only be temporarily “suspended,” but will offer this again in the future. I’m personally thoroughly disappointed with the pricing move and think it is now over priced given their lack of consistency and difficult ordering process. They’ve also tacked on a $25 delivery fee for orders under $125. This essentially forces patients into purchasing at least 3 eighths to avoid the fee, while also taking away reasonable pricing for those amounts. One Plant has made a series of moves that has Florida patient’s losing confidence. I’m hoping they turn it around.

Flower Options:
Loose flower - varying sizes eighths to ounces
Pre Rolls - 1/2 gram & 1 gram

Pricing:
$48/eighth
$90/quarter - not currently offered
$175/half ounce - not currently offered
$300/ounce - not currently offered

Pre Roll 1/2 gram - $8
Pre Roll 1 gram - $15

Fluent

Fluent has a small selection of cannabis flower strains available - both in eighths and prerolls. I don’t have a lot of experience with their flower, but from what I’ve seen it’s been good quality. Fluent releases traditional strains under their own names, so it can be a bit confusing to keep track of what is what. Baldor (Blue Dream) and Polaris (Grand Daddy Purple) seem to be patient favorites. Unfortunately Fluent’s flower is on the upper side of the price scale, and they do not allow discounts on flower purchases (with the exception of Veteran’s Discount). Available in store only.

With the exception of Veteran’s, discounts cannot be applied to flower purchases.

Harvest

Relatively new to the Florida market, Harvest has a decent variety of cannabis flower strains available including CBD and ratio strains. Unfortunately there is not a Harvest location anywhere near me, so I cannot comment first hand on the quality or consistency. While I haven’t used it, I have seen Harvest flower and it had a poor smell and appearance.

Pre Rolls Gram Single - $15/each

MedMen

With stores just beginning to open, MedMen is still getting their footing in Florida. A review of their website showed limited availability and selection of flower. I wont shop at MedMen due to their support of the MILF campaign, so I cannot comment on quality or consistency.
